EVALUATION

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Researching the various fashion documentaries was interesting,as i had always watched them my self, and they are some of the most popular seen on the television at the moment. With examples like; 'Gok's fashion fix' and 'What not to wear'.And watching them inspired me to make my own in the style to 'Gok's fashion fix'.When making are own fashion documentary (Quick Fashion) we made sure that the presenter was chatty, friendly,a person to be made over,we also knew we wanted some studio style shots of the person being made over (Janice) showing her in before and after stages, and lots of upbeat pop music to keep it fun and entertaining, just like in past fashion documentaries.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/goks-fashion-fix

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Our final outcome (Quick Fashion) matches the ancillary texts fairly well.My draft of the poster turned out very similar to the one I produced on photoshop. The storyboard has most of shots that match, and some are near enough the same. The combinations work well as I knew I wanted the outcomes of the ancillary texts to be bright and colourful, and I wanted the poster pictures to be shot in a studio, this also relates to the end of 'Quick Fashion' where we see 'Janice' in her 'New looks'.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience feedback through the questionnaire helped me to create 'Quick Fashion'.Using the results I found out that mainly women watch fashion documentaries and that most read fashion magazines, and are interested in taking part in a fashion documentary. Also I had to make sure we had fashion knowledge within the five minute clip, because the questionnaire results showed that that's what most people want from a presenter from a fashion documentary.Furthermore I uploaded 'Quick Fashion' onto YouTube and got many positive comments, however some showed us how we can improve on things, for example the ending needed a few bits cut out,and also at first the clip was over the time limit at seven minutes,so I had to cut it down to five minutes, the clip has now been taken of YouTube, now that i reviewed the comments.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

In making 'Quick Fashion' I used new media technologies in the forms of; photoshop, apple mac's and using a blog (blogspot).Firstly editing the clip was difficult at first because I had never used apple mac's before, however as I continued to work i found that I understood it more and more, and now feel confident in using editing technologies.I had also never used photoshop before, which was fun learning how to manipulate photo's and experiment with fonts and different texts. And lastly using a blog was much easier than I thought it would be,and is a very useful way of storing information, which I would definitely consider using again in another school subject.

In conclusion the overall experience of making 'Quick Fashion', and also researching the documentaries was very interesting and fun,and enjoyed watching various documentaries.Furthermore I feel proud of the final outcome of 'Quick Fashion' because it shares aspects to other fashion documentaries like 'Gok's Fashion Fix'.

"I'm trying to get Janice to learn what colours suit her and how she can feel confident and feminine in some new outfits, after a day shopping lets go back to the studio to try her new looks."

Documentary key features

Expository - The purpose is to inform and educate the audience about a subject.Screened material can include original and archive footage.Camera and crew are normally invisible to the audience. The material is tightly scripted and often accompanied by a voice-over narration - delivered either by an expert or an actor.'The authority of narration is such that it anchors the meaning of expository documentaries' (Killborn and Izod) examples:natural history documentaries.

Observational - Since the 1960s lightweight film and, later, video cameras have enabled filmmakers to record people in their natural environment with a minimum of fuss. This approach aims for greater degree of naturalness.Again, camera and crew take back seat. Example:Etre et Avoir

Fly-on-the-Wall - An extension of the observational mode,fly-on-the-wall approaches aim to blend into the background as the subjects go about their daily business.Filming might continue over a considerable period of time - six months, say. In a sense the aim is to give the audience unmediated access to the world. Example:The Family

Interactive/Reflexive - In this mode the filmmakers presence is fully acknowledged, even emphasised.By contrast with the above the filmmaker is both author and character in his or her movie, often appearing in shot and interacting with other people in the film might offer suprises, play with conventions, and aim to provoke reactions from subjects and audiences alike. The filmmaker may or may not take sides if their is conflict. Example:Roger and Me,Biggie and Tupac

Poetic/Avant garade - In this instance the emphasis is on creativity as the filmmaker explores, for example, the beautyin the everyday. Example:Night Mail,Lido

Drama Documentary - In the absense of archive material or access to witnesses, the filmmaker might stage dramatic reconstruction of events. Example:Who Bombed Birmingham?,Hillsbourgh

Mockumentary - Fictional films which paraody the forms and conventions of documentary, often for humorous effect. Example:This is Spinal Tap,Best in Show,Blair Witch Project,The Office

Personal - These 'films' are often shot on video and generally feature the maker addressing the camera directly, expounding or sharing his or her views with the viewer. Example:Video Nation

Micheal Moore Essay

Jodie Tucker
Media studies
Evaluating “Bowling for Columbine”
On April 20th 1999 two students from Columbine high school (Littleton Colorado), shot 12 students and 1 teacher before shooting themselves. Michael   Moore proactively investigates why ‘American culture is steeped in violence and fear.’ (Jürgen Fauth – film review). His passionate approach to these issues show how his heart is truly in these issues. Also he does this because he wants the public to understand how he feels about issues. This is effective because of the variety of achieve footage, interviews etc.
Michael Moore does not avoid stereotypical people to do with each issue, for example he shows a typical American man with his national flag flying outside the front of his house, and this shows what we all expect Americans to do. Throughout ‘Bowling for Columbine’ Michael Moore deliberately uses shocking visual footage, for example he shows the original footage and audio from the incident at Columbine, which includes seeing some of the victims getting shot and people in serious distress. Michael Moore does this to really make the viewer understand and feel the emotion of the horrific incident. Furthermore near the beginning of the documentary there is a good use of juxtaposition; there is an upbeat song with a man singing happy lyrics, it also includes the word ‘happiness’ in the chorus, this music is on whilst achieve footage is being shown of weaponry being made then lots of people getting shot. This defiantly had an effect on me as a viewer as you can see that it is infact real and almost happening right in front of you. Michael Moore does these shocking things for the interest of the general public, to show his views and for the public to make their mind up on what they think about certain issues. We know this from certain use of rhetorical questions, the opening line being ‘Is America a nation of gun nuts? Or just nuts?’
Moore uses lots of effective editing decisions like the one I mentioned before about the people getting shot, also there is another point in the film which shows people making weapons of mass destruction and in the background is elevator music. Moore uses a lot of effective music to a completely different image; this also makes it really shocking. He also uses this technique in his other films, for example ‘Fahrenheit 9/11’, especially parts with President ‘George Bush’. He uses simple folk music (banjo playing), when Bush is talking about something serious, this helps for Moore to get his point across about Bush and how he thinks that he wasn’t good for America. Moore’s filmic style also includes lots of uses of achieve footage. One that stood out for me a lot was in ‘Bowling for columbine’ when a brief story of America is told in a cartoon, which also includes lots of jokes, showing how Michael Moore sees guns in America are a joke.
Additionally the narrative of the film is also very sarcastic. It does help to simplify complex issues within it, because the issues are difficult to deal with and Moore makes all the situations seem more light-hearted. At the end of the film Moore creates a ‘false sense of closure’, he achieves this by almost ending it quickly and on a down note, and he does this to try to get the public to do something about these issues.

Michael Moore has lots of common sense and he uses this to his advantage against the people who are’ in the wrong’ in his documentary. This format is successful because he presents facts very simply so a wide range of viewers can understand exactly his argument. The argument is not explicit because of his calm and down to earth approach at the problems, however he does mean what he is saying passionately but can get away with being somebody with ‘common sense’.
The viewer is positioned in the way that they can see everything from Michael Moore’s point of view. This is effective because it makes the viewer feel part of the documentary (involved with the situations). He makes the issues come across as interesting and part of everybody’s everyday life. I think Michael Moore’s documentaries are very interesting and engaging to watch, and I recommend them.
